The Crew That Watches the Wind

Consultoriainnova paints houses in Pasadena. We work out of Colorado Blvd in the 91106 ZIP, and most of what we do is exterior: stucco, wood siding and shingle, fascia, rafter tails, doors and sash.

We describe ourselves by the weather rather than by the paint because of something every painter in the foothills learns and not every painter admits. The offshore wind that comes down out of the San Gabriels a dozen or more times a year decides whether a coating day is worth having. Dust lands in wet film. Spray leaves the wall. Paint skins before it levels. None of that shows up on the invoice, and all of it shows up on the house.

How That Changes a Job

It changes the schedule first. We build slack into an exterior calendar here, because a job quoted as six working days may take eight in a week with two blow days in it. We would rather tell you that at estimate than invent a date we then have to defend.

It changes the method second. We spray where spraying is right, usually into a back roll so the coating is worked into the surface rather than laid on top of it. When the anemometer says otherwise, the gun goes back in the truck and we brush and roll. Slower on the day, and the neighbor’s car stays the color it was.

And it changes what gets set up before any lid comes off. Weighted drop cloths instead of a corner of tape. Shrubs sheeted and tied. Windows and hardscape masked properly, not just at the obvious edges. A gust finds every shortcut you took at eight in the morning.

The Houses Here

Pasadena is largely older stock. Craftsman bungalows with deep overhangs and exposed rafter tails, Spanish Revival stucco, wood siding and shingle, and interior plaster rather than drywall in a lot of it. Greene and Greene left a long shadow over the neighborhoods around Bungalow Heaven, and those houses reward careful work on the details: brackets, beam ends, sash, and the underside of the eaves that most quotes quietly skip.

A great deal of it also predates 1978, which means paint layers that can contain lead. We test rather than assume, and we work wet and contained rather than sanding dry. It costs more and it is the correct way to do it.

What We Will Tell You

That surface prep is most of the job and most of the cost. That two coats over a color change is not an upsell. That elastomeric is right on some cracked stucco and wrong on a wall that cannot dry. That your south and west elevations will fail years before the others, and that repainting only those is sometimes the sensible spend.
